so I was watching the Today show...

and there was George, standing there with Laura amidst the frames of houses built by Habitat for Humanity, both of them looking equally clueless about the use of a hammer, and Laura just inappropriately dressed for such work-even if just for a photo op. As Matt Lauer asked him questions about the federal response to Katrina-rather lack thereof-as well as about Harriet Miers and Karl Rove, George...well, he proved to me again why it is so hard to watch him speak as he stands there and twitches, chuckles, and looks mildly like a trapped animal as the questions get harder...particuarly when asked again about Karl Rove. He "stayed on message" saying that he couldn't comment on the "on-going investigation" (with a little look of "Help me!" in his eyes) And on the subject of Harriet Miers, Laura had to interject as George was losing his train of thought (not like there's a full track there anyway...)as well as adding that she felt that perhaps sexism was indeed a factor amidst the Miers criticisms. I think though, one of the best desriptions comes from The Note (as stolen from wonkette this morning):

"In a television interview on another network this morning LIVE from his Habitat event, the President committed no serious news, but he did laugh at a lot of the questions (for reasons any student of George W. Bush would well understand), and he did allow himself to be shown hammering purposefully, with a jejune combination of cowboy swagger and yuppie self-consciousness."

(can just picture John Roberts going "any guy that uses the word "jejune"...")

IN THE MEANTIME...speaking of Miers...someone's found some paper on her (2,200 pages...isn't that the amount of pages of stuff we still needed to get from the White House about John Roberts before confirming him?) and it includes a bit about her asking the former Gov. of Texas to veto legislation that would have protected a "handful of greedy, but immensely rich and powerful" trial lawyers. Bush not only vetoed the bill, but...still wants her?!? Oh wait, here's why (according to the New York Times):

""You are the best governor ever - deserving of great respect," Harriet E. Miers wrote to George W. Bush days after his 51st birthday in July 1997." *okay, who else is going "Like, WOW, you are the best governor EVER!" and also thinking "what kind of crack you on?!"*

and later she writes to him ""I appreciate your friendship and candor - never hold back your sage advice."" *um, if I had a beverage on me I think a serious spittake would have just occured...sage advice?!?!? I don't think George knows what "sage" means?!?!? Holy crap who is this woman?!?!?*

TELL YOUR SENATOR TO JUST SAY NOOOOOOOO!

And as long as you're talking to your Senators, you might want to ask how the Conservative ones could possibly be trying to cut back or completely take away social programs that deal with poverty when people in the Gulf Coast need these programs most...

And speaking of people caught in tragedy...say prayers, send positive energy, whatever you can do the people of Pakistan, India and Kashmir as the death toll of the earthquake that struck over the weekend is now up to around 30, 000. Unbelievable...and help has been hampered by storms...

And I suppose Yankee fans are also feeling some pain today as they lost to Anaheim *...snicker, snicker...*cough* was I chuckling? no that wasn't me...*heh heh heh* I look at it this way. It's the way of the baseball cosmos. If the Red Sox aren't in it, the Yanks can't be either...it's just not allowed. So go WHITE SOX! (they haven't won a World Series since 1917 so why the heck not them this time :)?

So while you do a happy dance or wallow in your coffee, or just figure out how you're going to get to the Estrogenius Festival at Manhattan Theatre Source this week, KEEP E-MAILING!!! E-mail, call, fax, write your friends and family, the press and your Congressfolk and let them know that you are paying attention!! and pass it on, pass it on, pass it on!

Peace --Alex
